E-Bike Battery and Range: How Far Will You Really Go?

Manufacturers often quote the best-case distance for an electric bike. Real range depends on the battery size and how you ride. This guide shows how to read the numbers and estimate your own range.

Battery capacity: look for watt-hours (Wh)

Battery size is measured in watt-hours. If a listing only gives volts and amp-hours, multiply them: for example 48 V x 15 Ah = 720 Wh. A bigger number means more stored energy, but also more weight and usually a higher price.

A simple range estimate

As a rough rule, many e-bikes use somewhere between 10 and 25 Wh per mile, depending on how much assist you use. Divide the battery Wh by your expected consumption. A 500 Wh battery at 15 Wh per mile gives roughly 33 miles. Treat this as an estimate, not a promise.
